Cultivated in the late 50s, this hybrid is an unknown cross between American stock and French hybrids. The variety is widely planted in the Loire, and has made its way into the New World winemaking areas of Mid Western States, the Finger Lakes District of America and also in New South Wales Australia.
Okahu Estate is the pioneer of this variety in Northland, following on from plantings originally made by Matua in Waimauku. Northland appears to have adopted Chambourcin as its own with several other Northland wineries producing successful vintages.
Starts off as very fruit driven; especially raspberries and as it ages in bottle, takes on more Earthy undertones.
Rich, Dark sweet cherries and Raspberry, with a floral, Delicate spice.
A full rich and intense burst of Dark Plums, cherries and Raspberry, finishing off with spicy long fine tannins.
Braised ox tail, venison casserole, or lamb shanks, with mushrooms and some of the actual wine to make a sauce. Chambourcin deserves big rich dishes to match its power.
