Alan commenced work at Okahu Estate to ‘help out’ at vintage in 1998. Working under then wine maker, Michael Bendit, Alan developed a strong interest in wine and worked as a cellar hand for a couple of years. He then completed a three year extra mural diploma in viticulture and winemaking at Eastern Institute of Technology passing with flying colours. Alan took a break in 2006 post vintage to tour Australia and in 2007 post vintage went and worked in France in the Languedoc region SE France (largest wine region in France). Alan is equally at home in the vineyard and winery and is a friendly and popular member of the Okahu Team. You are also likely to meet him at Wine Festivals, or Okahu’s Cellar Door as he pours tasting samples of Okahu’s wines.(if you ask nicely he may give you a guided tour of the winery)
Alan has worked as, cellar hand, then as assistant winemaker to previous winemakers at Okahu including Jennifer Bound, with her shift to consultant for the 2009 vintage, Alan was appointed wine maker in March 2009 in time to conduct the 2009 vintage.
Alan has a particularly sensitive palate, and is a thoroughly disciplined wine maker, with an emphasis on high standards of quality.
