STARS SHINE BRIGHTLY FOR OKAHU ESTATE IN WINESTATE MAGAZINE’S TASTING.
WINESTATE MAGAZINE UPPER NORTH ISLAND AWARDS
Far North winery, Okahu Estate has had a very positive result for its wines shown in the Winestate Magazine’s Upper North Island tasting, soon to be published.
Winestate is the largest circulation wine magazine in Australasia and its New Zealand editor, Michael Cooper is an author of 32 books, including the Montana Book Awards prize winning “Wine Atlas of New Zealand”. Michael was awarded “Officer of the New Zealand Order of Merit, for services to wine writing in the 2004 New Years honours.
Michael acted as chief judge on the panel appraising “wines from the upper North Island” in the tasting held recently. On the judging panel with him were senior judges Ken Moon and James Rowan.
The upper North Island tasting includes wines from Gisborne North.
Okahu received five recommendations in the tastings. Okahu Estate’s top wine in the tasting was its Old Brother Johns Tawny Port which gained the top placing in the fortified section with four and a half stars (high silver) with judges comments including “A top flight example of New Zealand fortified Tawny hued, with sweet raisiny flavours, showing excellent richness and ‘Rancio’ complexity”.
Okahu’s Shipwreck Bay Syrahs also did well, with the 2007 achieving four stars (silver) and the 2008, three stars (bronze).
Once again Okahu’s Chambourcin also showed well with their 2007 wine achieving three stars (bronze).
Okahu Estate owner and founder, Monty Knight was very pleased with the results, and offered high praise for the viticulture and wine making team including Joe Lewer and Brenda Long – viticulture, and Alan Collinson and Jennifer Bound wine making.
Other Northland wineries to achieve success at the tasting were Marsden Estate Pinot Gris three stars (bronze) and Soland Runty Rosè 2008 3 stars.
Rod McIvor, winemaker/owner of Marsden Estate and president of the Northland Grape Growers Association, congratulated Okahu Estate on their success and commented that once again Northland’s red wines had a top showing against their peers. Without a doubt, Syrah and similar spicy Rhone style reds are putting Northland firmly on the New Zealand wine growing map, along with our continued positive results for Chardonnay and Pinot Gris” said Rod.
