FAR NORTH WINERIES ADD MEDALS AT
ROYAL EASTER SHOW WINE AWARDS
Far North wineries added a further nine medals to their already impressive array at the 2010 Royal Easter Show Wine Awards judged recently.
Butterfish Bay wines, grown at their estate at Paewhenua Island, headed the list with a silver medal for their Butterfish Bay Vigonier 2009.
“Our continued success with both Vigonier and Pinot Gris is indeed very heartening” said Russell Green, proprietor of Butterfish Bay Estate. “The particular microclimate of the Mangonui Harbour and Paewhenua Island appears to favour these two popular varietals”.
Butterfish Bay also scored a bronze for their Pinot Gris 09.
Okahu Estate was once again winning medals with bronze awards for their Okahu Chardonnay 07, Okahu Pinotage 08 and Shipwreck Bay Riesling 08. Proprietor Monty Knight was happy to acknowledge Okahu’s success. “Our first ever medals were won at this show and year on year we continue to gain awards, so that speaks volumes about our consistency”.
Marsden Estate of Kerikeri also won two bronze medals with their Marsden Estate Rosé 09 and Pinot Gris 09.
“We are delighted to be part of the successful wines in this years show” said owner/winemaker Rod McIvor who is currently up to his ears in grapes as he makes wine from this year’s early vintage. “At this time, I will forecast a fantastic result in the future for the 2010 wines. The fruit is the best I have ever seen in my 17 years at Marsden Estate”.
Other medal winners were:
Jennifer Bound’s Mania George Chambourcin/Malbec 08 Bronze
Karikari Estate’s Chardonnay 07 Bronze
