2009 VINTAGE LOOKS LIKE A WINNER FOR NORTHLAND WINERIES
Northland winegrowers gathered at Marsden Estate in Kerikeri recently to conduct an evaluation of the wines produced from the 2009 harvest.
Most of the wines at the tasting were still in barrel or tank and far from completing their maturation.
The tasting offers winemakers an opportunity to have their wines evaluated by their peers and is an opportunity to gain constructive criticism and suggestions on the handling and future development of the wines.
“Overall the standard of the wines presented by the eight wineries participating, shows that 2009 will go down as an excellent year,” says Rod McIvor, President of the Northland Winegrowers Association. “The tasting panel saw some wonderful whites, including Pinot Gris, Vigonier, and Chardonnay and some very, very good Syrah, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Malbec, Pinotage and Chambourcin”.
“The reds are showing nice ripe fruit, and typical Variatal character including floral spice with no signs of greenness”, said participant, Monty Knight of Okahu Estate. Ben Dugdale of Karikari agreed and also commented on the rich, creamy Chardonnays. Northland should keep a look out for these 09 wines” he said, “They are destined for great things”.
