SILVER LINING FOR FAR NORTH WINERIES AND GROWERS AT NATIONAL BRAGATO WINE AWARDS
Far North wine growers have been awarded three silver medals for wines produced from their fruit at the annual Bragato wine awards, judged recently at the Bragato Conference in Hawkes Bay.
The Bragato, awards growers for their viticultural skills in producing the fruit that results in award winning wines.
Silver medals were awarded to:
Okahu Pinotage 2007 - Top in its class, grown under management by Okahu Estate on the Henwood Vineyard in Kaitaia.
Soland Fat Pig Rose 2009 – Top equal in its class. Fruit grown by Bruce Soland, Fat Pig Vineyard, Kerikeri.
Marsden Estate Black Rocks Chardonnay 2007 – Grown by Rod McIvor, Marsden Estate Vineyard, Kerikeri.
Far North entrants were also awarded five bronze medals. Notably:
Morepork Vineyard Pinot Gris 2009 – The first award for this small hand managed vineyard in Kerikeri. Owner/grower Phil Mehan said, “ We are very excited about the Bronze medal, especially considering the wine was produced from 2-3 year old vines”.
Other bronze awards went to:
Marsden Estate Pinot Gris 08
Karikari Estate Pinotage 2008
Okahu Estate Pinotage 2008
Okahu Estate Chambourcin 2007

“This is a great result for Far North vineyards. Proving once again, consistent success for both our reds and whites”, says Northland Winegrowers President, Rod McIvor. “Most of the award winning wines will be available for tasting at “Savouring the Source”, the Food and Wine showcase for the Far North at the Waimate Show to be held this year on Saturday 14 November 2009. They will also be available at the Taste Bay of Islands 10 October 2009 at Copthorne Waitangi Resort.
Bruce Soland of Fat Pig Vineyard is regularly winning awards for his Rosé, as is Rod McIvor of Marsden Estate for Black Rocks Chardonnay. Whilst Monty Knight’s Okahu Estate reds, Pinotage and Chambourcin also regularly win awards. “This consistency is proving the Far North is more than capable of producing wines of quality and distinction”, says Monty. “So locals can buy them and serve them with pride”.
